A solid beginning puberty book for upper elementary。

Elizabeth

Great book for young girls! It keeps the information at their level while being truthful and very positive。 I LOVE how this book works to create a positive body image for girls at an age when they most need it!

Alexis

I finished my read-through but am also reading this with my oldest。 She is curious and excited and this is bringing up lots of healthy questions and discussions。 I loved this! It is inclusive of all bodies and incredibly positive and affirming。

Positive, informative, and very clear

This is a great book! I really liked it and definitely taught me a few things。 All girls 8+ should read this because it is very handy and warns you about a lot of important things。 The writing, pictures, colours。。。 they are all great!

It was awesome and inspiring and it was an amazing guide

This was a great first book to read about puberty with my 10 year old。 I love it’s body positive message and that it didn’t get into topics that were too mature for her。 It will be a great resource for us to go back to as she gets older too。

Terrific, reassuring information about a confusing stage of life。 How I wish this book had been around when I was a young girl! Thoroughly body-positive and inclusive。 Bought this for my 10 yo girls who are too embarrassed by the very idea of puberty to read it themselves。 Hoped my reading and talking about it would help normalize the information, we’ll see。

Kim

Now re-reading with Mini-Me。 Interested to see what she thinks。

This is a good book to read with your daughter when it gets to be that time in their life。 The author broke it down easily enough for both parents and children to read and understand。 There are a few things that I wasn't happy about, but my daughter and I were able to talk about why I didn't like this or that。 I would recommend this book to any parent who needs to be having this type of talk with their young daughter。 This is a good book to read with your daughter when it gets to be that time in their life。 The author broke it down easily enough for both parents and children to read and understand。 There are a few things that I wasn't happy about, but my daughter and I were able to talk about why I didn't like this or that。 I would recommend this book to any parent who needs to be having this type of talk with their young daughter。 。。。more

Read with my soon to be 8 year old who is just starting to show signs of puberty。 Loved the body positive framing and she loved all the pro-girl language。 Helped her learn more about the process and her body and not to fear the process。 Put her mind at ease。

I wanted to read this before I gave it to my 9 year old daughter and honestly。。。 I wish I had had this book when I was a child。 It’s informative, but speaks to the reader like they are a friend。 It’s not overwhelming and is definitely something every young girl should read to prepare themselves for puberty。 Also, it helps me answer questions when my daughter has them, but at her level。

Rose

Well I found this really helpful it feels like someone is speaking to you not you reading a book 5 out of 5

I read this in preparation to give to my daughter who is about to turn 11。 It explains things so well and I really appreciated how she normalizes puberty and some of the changes that can seem scary to young girls。 I was raised very conservative。 My parents signed me out of the sex education portion taught in 7th grade and I just learned not to ask questions or talk about any of this。 I don't think that's the answer and I want to be prepared when my daughter hits puberty。 I would much rather her I read this in preparation to give to my daughter who is about to turn 11。 It explains things so well and I really appreciated how she normalizes puberty and some of the changes that can seem scary to young girls。 I was raised very conservative。 My parents signed me out of the sex education portion taught in 7th grade and I just learned not to ask questions or talk about any of this。 I don't think that's the answer and I want to be prepared when my daughter hits puberty。 I would much rather her understand what's going on, than be fearful, embarrassed or ashamed。 I love how throughout the book Taylor suggests talking to a trusted adult and even goes on to explain characteristics of a trusted adult。 I'm not sure whether my daughter will talk to me about any of this right away or ever, but I love that she'll have a resource (this book!) to help her understand things better than I did。 I also love that this opens the door to those conversations if and when she wants to have them。 。。。more

Made hard conversations with my ten-year-old A LOT easier。 This book also counted as part of my 2020 PopSugar Reading Challenge, "a bildungsroman。" Made hard conversations with my ten-year-old A LOT easier。 This book also counted as part of my 2020 PopSugar Reading Challenge, "a bildungsroman。" 。。。more

This was a great book that speaks to girls about puberty in a friendly and very body-positive way。 It did a good job of communicating basic information about puberty for girls ages 8 and up。 I didn’t agree with everything the author wrote (like that braces “can be fun。” I guess a lot of kids probably get Invisalign these days, which is probably easier to deal with, but I can say from personal experience that in no way are braces “fun。”), but I did agree with all of her major points and how she d This was a great book that speaks to girls about puberty in a friendly and very body-positive way。 It did a good job of communicating basic information about puberty for girls ages 8 and up。 I didn’t agree with everything the author wrote (like that braces “can be fun。” I guess a lot of kids probably get Invisalign these days, which is probably easier to deal with, but I can say from personal experience that in no way are braces “fun。”), but I did agree with all of her major points and how she described important concepts。 Would definitely recommend this book to preteen girls。 。。。more

Hurray! A great book to leave lying around for kids to pick up and peruse。 I especially love Taylor's note that she doesn't use the word "beautiful" much for people and how many better ways there are to describe people。 Hurray! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book is AWESOME and the MOST BODY POSITIVE book for girls about their changing body and puberty。 I would say introduce this book early, 8 is a great age to start, to have girls start reading, learning, and instill positive messages about puberty (lots of questions, sharing of information, and discussions will happen)。 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Taylor's Celebrate Your Body is a body-positive guide to puberty。 Taylor emphasizes that all bodies are unique, special, and on their own timeline-- be patient and celebrate your body。 Beyond the more traditional topics (anatomy, menstruation, timelines, hygiene) Taylor takes time to discuss changing frienships, nutrition, managing your mood, and finding a "trusted adult" with which to have further conversations。 While this isn't a gender-neutral book, in the introduction Taylor acknowledges tha Taylor's Celebrate Your Body is a body-positive guide to puberty。 Taylor emphasizes that all bodies are unique, special, and on their own timeline-- be patient and celebrate your body。 Beyond the more traditional topics (anatomy, menstruation, timelines, hygiene) Taylor takes time to discuss changing frienships, nutrition, managing your mood, and finding a "trusted adult" with which to have further conversations。 While this isn't a gender-neutral book, in the introduction Taylor acknowledges that maybe not everyone reading this book feels like the word "girl" is right for them and provides some trans resources in the back of the book。 I do wish there was a little more discussion and normalizing of gender non-conformity。 Last year (in the before times), one of our LS students approached me looking for a puberty book and everything I had to offer her was from the last century。 After some research, I bought this and just got around to reading it myself。 Overall, I loved it。 Great body-positive messages, easy to understand, useful information。 There's absolutely no mention of sex in this book。 I'm excited to check out the next in the series for older folx。 I would recommend this to any of our LS students and maybe a 7th grader if it was all I had, but I think by MS you've probably aged out of this。 。。。more

"Celebrate Your Body (and it's Changes Too!) by Sonya Renee Taylor, author of "The Body is Not an Apology" (also, her instagram of the same name is just。。。 amazing)I bought this for my daughter when she was 9, because after looking at a lot of books about puberty for girls, I found this one to be the most informative, without some of the subtle (or even outright overt) body shaming, white-centric, hetero-normative themes of other books。It talks about EVERYTHING from how to deal with friendships "Celebrate Your Body (and it's Changes Too!) by Sonya Renee Taylor, author of "The Body is Not an Apology" (also, her instagram of the same name is just。。。 amazing)I bought this for my daughter when she was 9, because after looking at a lot of books about puberty for girls, I found this one to be the most informative, without some of the subtle (or even outright overt) body shaming, white-centric, hetero-normative themes of other books。It talks about EVERYTHING from how to deal with friendships and crushes (and it doesn't focus on only hetero crushes/relationships), personal grooming (I appreciated that it talks about all textures of hair, and that shaving is a personal choice) and ALL the physical and emotional changes that come with changing bodies in a matter of fact way。 It does not really discuss masturbation, intercourse, STDs, pregnancy etc。 so you may want other books like "It's Not the Stork" or "It's So Amazing" (both by Robie H。 Harris and Michael Emberley) if your child wants more information on those topics。I appreciated that this book represents a lot of diverse body types, and reinforces that everyone has a "good body。" This is the book I wish I would have been able to read when I was a tween in the late 80s/early 90s - I definitely cried a couple times at how affirming it was。 。。。more

This book is an excellent resource on puberty。 If you’re not familiar with Sonya, she is the founder of The Body Is Not An Apology, and her work is rooted in body positivity。 I love that Sonya takes the time to guide the reader through different aspects of who they are in a body affirming way。 There is language in here to help kids understand that their bodies are fine the way they are, reminds them of diversity in size, shape and puberty timeline。 What you will find:*Information on skin care an This book is an excellent resource on puberty。 If you’re not familiar with Sonya, she is the founder of The Body Is Not An Apology, and her work is rooted in body positivity。 I love that Sonya takes the time to guide the reader through different aspects of who they are in a body affirming way。 There is language in here to help kids understand that their bodies are fine the way they are, reminds them of diversity in size, shape and puberty timeline。 What you will find:*Information on skin care and skin colors/shades (and embracing our uniqueness)。*A section on breast development by stages/timeline and how to measure bra size。 *Sections that go into detail on the anatomy of the vulva and internal reproductive organs with diagrams。 *Detailed information on periods and period care。 However, there are only pads and tampons mentioned。*There is a section that talks about friendships, what makes a good friend and the emotional flux during this time of growth。 *Almost zero talk about diets。 In fact, Sonya mentions the harm of diet culture and steers them to resources that talk about health at every size。 She doesn’t mention BMI and doesn’t use the word “fat” in a negative way。 *There is also a section that talks about privacy and consent。*A glossary and list of resourcesKeep in mind, this book is not gender neutral。 Sonya acknowledges that not every reader will identify themselves as a “girl” and gives them the option to identify with the material through their own pronouns。 And the words "girl" and "woman" don’t seem to be used as frequently in comparison to Celebrate Your Body 2。 There are some illustrations showing diversity, but I think the second book does a better job of adding more。 。。。more

This is a great body-positive guidebook for girls about to go through puberty。 I read it before handing it off to my 9-year-old and I learned a few things! I read this to see if this was some kind of agenda indoctrination, but it turned out to be really good。 If I had a daughter this age, I would let her read it。

The book is nicely illustrated but the content is a bit babyish。 The writing suits an 8 or 9 year old but the content is probably more appropriate for an older kid。 I am a bit worried that the puberty timeline (pg。 13) and the breast development timeline (pg 45) provide contradictory ages。 I wouldn’t suggest this is the only book to give your daughter to explain puberty and beware of the babyish narrative- it may put off kids that are used to more sophisticated informative writing。 This book is The book is nicely illustrated but the content is a bit babyish。 The writing suits an 8 or 9 year old but the content is probably more appropriate for an older kid。 I am a bit worried that the puberty timeline (pg。 13) and the breast development timeline (pg 45) provide contradictory ages。 I wouldn’t suggest this is the only book to give your daughter to explain puberty and beware of the babyish narrative- it may put off kids that are used to more sophisticated informative writing。 This book is best suited to a older girl 10-11+ that has low reading comprehension。 。。。more
